Rob Ferl
Astronaut & Space Biologist
Exploring life, science, and discovery in Earth’s most extraordinary places—from polar ice to space
Rob Ferl is a NASA-funded commercial astronaut and space biologist whose work explores how life responds to some of the most unusual, challenging, and awe‑inspiring environments humans encounter. He has lived and conducted research in both the Arctic and Antarctica, working in remote polar settings where the natural world is stark, beautiful, and unlike anywhere else on Earth - to better inform space exploration.
Trained as a scientist and experienced as an explorer, Ferl brings together space biology, polar science, and human experience to illuminate what these environments reveal about adaptation, resilience, and discovery. His work spans spaceflight research and field science, examining how plants, microbes, and people respond to unfamiliar conditions—cold, altered light cycles, isolation, and limited resources—common to both polar regions and space missions.
As a speaker, he is known for translating science into accessible, story‑driven talks for general audiences. Drawing on firsthand experiences from polar expeditions and spaceflight research, his presentations emphasize curiosity, wonder, and perspective, helping audiences better understand the remarkable places humans explore and what those places teach us about life on Earth and beyond.
SPEAKING TOPICS
Ferl’s talks are designed for educated, curious audiences and are adaptable for lectures, expedition programs, and public events.
Life at the Extremes
How humans and living systems adapt in extraordinary environments—from the polar regions to space.
Why Humans Explore
What draws us to strange and distant places, and what exploration reveals about curiosity, risk, and discovery - and our place in the universe.
Living and Working in Remote Places
What it’s like to spend time in polar field camps, space and space‑analog environments, and how people adapt to unfamiliar worlds.
Why Antarctica Matters
Science at the bottom of the world, and what this remarkable continent reveals about what it might be like living on another world.
From Polar Stations to Space Stations
How research in Earth’s most remote environments informs human exploration beyond our planet.
EXPLORATION & PERSPECTIVE
Having worked in both polar regions and in spaceflight research, Ferl offers a rare perspective on exploration at the edges of human experience. His time living and working in remote, beautiful, and demanding environments on Earth and in space provides insight into how life adapts—physically, psychologically, and culturally—when removed from the familiar. For expedition and travel audiences, his talks connect scientific discovery to place, enriching the experience of witnessing firsthand some of the most remarkable regions on Earth.
